Born in Trier in 1818, Marx earned a philosophy doctorate from the University of Jena in 1841 and fell under the spell of Hegel before turning to critique him. In Paris he met Friedrich Engels, who became his lifelong collaborator, and by 1848 they had written The Communist Manifesto, laying out a program for proletarian revolution.
