About this person

Born in Trier in 1818, Marx earned a philosophy doctorate from the University of Jena in 1841 and fell under the spell of Hegel before turning to critique him. In Paris he met Friedrich Engels, who became his lifelong collaborator, and by 1848 they had written The Communist Manifesto, laying out a program for proletarian revolution. Expelled from Belgium and Germany, Marx settled in London in 1849, where he spent decades writing Das Kapital, his sweeping critique of classical political economy. From 1864 he led the International Workingmen's Association, battling anarchists for control of the labor movement, and in 1875 wrote the Critique of the Gotha Programme on the transition to communism. He died stateless in 1883 and was buried in Highgate Cemetery, leaving a body of work that would guide communist states across continents and make him one of the principal architects of modern sociology.
