Born December 21, 1937, to actor Henry Fonda and socialite Frances Ford Seymour, she arrived on Broadway and screen in 1960 with a Tony nomination out of the gate. The comedies came first - Cat Ballou, Barefoot in the Park, Barbarella (directed by her first husband, Roger Vadim) - then the pivot: a Best Actress Oscar for playing a prostitute in Klute (1971), another for Coming Home (1978), five more nominations across the decade. In 1982 she released Jane Fonda's Workout, which became the highest-selling VHS ever and spawned 21 sequels over 13 years. A 1972 trip to Hanoi - and one photograph on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun - earned her the nickname "Hanoi Jane" and a fury that never fully dimmed. She married activist Tom Hayden, then billionaire Ted Turner in 1991, retired from acting, divorced Turner in 2001, and returned with Monster-in-Law. From 2015 to 2022 she anchored Grace and Frankie on Netflix, collecting another Emmy nomination at 78, still working, still agitating.
