James Douglas Muir Leno spent years doing stand-up before NBC chose him in 1992 to replace Johnny Carson as host of The Tonight Show. He held the desk until September 2009, when Conan O'Brien took over and Leno moved to a primetime talk show at 10:00 p.m. O'Brien turned down NBC's offer to let Leno do a half-hour lead-in, sparking the 2010 Tonight Show conflict that ended with Leno back behind the desk on March 1, 2010. He hosted until February 6, 2014, and that year was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame. After Tonight, he turned to cars: hosting Jay Leno's Garage from 2014 to 2022, reviving You Bet Your Life from 2021 to 2023, and writing a regular column in Popular Mechanics on his collection.
