About

Born in Cincinnati in 1946, Spielberg grew up in Phoenix and moved to California to study film. After directing television episodes and the TV movie Duel (1971), he made his theatrical debut with The Sugarland Express (1974), beginning a decades-long partnership with composer John Williams. Jaws (1975) made him a household name, followed by Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., and the original Indiana Jones trilogy. In 1993 he directed Jurassic Park—then the highest-grossing film ever—and Schindler's List back-to-back, winning his first Best Director Oscar for the latter. A second came fo…
