Something wrong?Dr. Alan Grant made dinosaurs feel possible - not the CGI, the man squinting at them.

About this person
Born in Northern Ireland in 1947, Neill moved to New Zealand at seven and emerged as a screen presence in 1977's Sleeping Dogs. Through the 1980s he toggled between Australian cinema (My Brilliant Career, Evil Angels) and genre work that leaned dark - The Final Conflict, Possession, later In the Mouth of Madness and Event Horizon. Jurassic Park in 1993 made him a global figure, the paleontologist who sold wonder better than the effects did. He returned to that franchise twice, in 2001 and 2022, while building a television career that pulled Emmy and Golden Globe nods for Merlin, Reilly Ace of Spies, and appearances in The Tudors and Peaky Blinders. Hunt for the Wilderpeople in 2016 reminded people he could do warmth as well as unease. He died in July 2026, three months shy of seventy-nine.
