Born in Chicago in 1951, Williams cut his teeth doing stand-up in San Francisco and Los Angeles through the mid-1970s, releasing comedy albums before landing the role that made him: Mork, the alien in Mork & Mindy, which ran from 1978 to 1982. Film work followed in both comedy and drama - Popeye in 1980, then The World According to Garp, Moscow on the Hudson, and a string of Oscar-nominated turns: Good Morning, Vietnam in 1987, Dead Poets Society in 1989, The Fisher King in 1991. He won Best Supporting Actor for Good Will Hunting in 1997. His filmography sprawled across family comedies like Mrs. Doubtfire, Jumanji, and the Night at the Museum series, darker work in Insomnia and One Hour Photo, and voice roles including the Genie in Aladdin. In his final years he struggled with severe depression, undiagnosed Lewy body dementia, and symptoms he and doctors mistook for Parkinson's. He died by suicide in August 2014 at 63.
