Born into poverty in rural Mississippi in 1954 and raised by a single teenage mother, Winfrey was sent to Nashville to live with her father, a barber, and landed a radio job while still in high school. By 19 she was a local news co-anchor, but her emotional, extemporaneous style got her moved to daytime - where in the mid-1980s she took a third-rated Chicago talk show to number one and launched her own production company. The Oprah Winfrey Show ran in national syndication from 1986 to 2011, and Winfrey is credited with creating a more intimate, confessional form of media communication that revolutionized the tabloid talk-show genre pioneered by Phil Donahue. By the mid-1990s she had reinvented the show around literature, self-improvement, and spirituality - a turn that drew both praise for overcoming adversity to become a benefactor and criticism for unleashing a confession culture and promoting controversial self-help ideas. In 2008 her endorsement of Barack Obama was estimated to have been worth a million votes in the Democratic primaries, and she later launched her own network, OWN, in 2009.
