Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner was born 2 October 1951 and took the name Sting into the Police, where he fronted, wrote, and played bass from 1977 to 1984. The band split when they were massive. He went solo in 1985 and pulled in jazz, reggae, classical, new-age, and worldbeat—genres the Police never touched. The combined record sales passed 100 million. Seventeen Grammys followed, plus three Brit Awards, a Golden Globe, an Emmy, four Oscar nominations, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.
