Eric Patrick Clapton was born 30 March 1945 and came up through local bands before joining the Yardbirds in 1963, then John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. In 1966 he formed Cream with Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce — sustained blues improvisations, arty psychedelic pop, four albums, then done by November 1968. He tried again with Blind Faith (one album, one tour), then Derek and the Dominos, which lasted just long enough to record Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs and give him "Layla". The solo decades that followed were uneven but huge: a 1974 cover of "I Shot the Sheriff" that brought reggae to…
