About this person
Geoffrey Arnold Beck joined the Yardbirds in the mid-1960s and left to front the Jeff Beck Group, then Beck, Bogert & Appice, before making a sharp turn in 1975 toward instrumental music that blurred blues rock, jazz fusion, and electronica. Blow by Blow and Wired succeeded critically, and he won eight Grammys across his career, six of them for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. But while Rolling Stone called him "one of the most influential lead guitarists in rock" and peers dubbed him a "guitarist's guitarist", commercial success eluded him in ways it never did his former bandmates. He recorded with dozens of artists, earned the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music in 2014, and entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice - once with the Yardbirds in 1992, once solo in 2009. He died on 10 January 2023.
