John Christopher Depp II started as a musician before landing his first film role in A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. A stint on 21 Jump Street from 1987 to 1990 made him a teen idol, but he spent the next decade chasing stranger, riskier parts — What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Dead Man, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas — and building a long collaboration with Tim Burton that began with Edward Scissorhands in 1990 and ran through eight films.
