Kevin Patrick Smith was born August 2, 1970, and came to prominence in 1994 with Clerks, a low-budget comedy he wrote, directed, co-produced, co-edited, and acted in as Silent Bob, one half of the stoner duo Jay and Silent Bob. The character became a through-line: Smith played him again in Mallrats (1995), Chasing Amy (1997), Dogma (1999), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), Clerks II (2006), Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019), and Clerks III (2022), all set primarily in New Jersey and woven into a shared universe he named the "View Askewniverse" after his production company View Askew, co-founded with Scott Mosier. Outside that universe he directed Jersey Girl (2004), Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008), Cop Out (2010), Red State (2011), and Tusk (2014), played a rogue hacker in Live Free or Die Hard (2007), and directed episodes of The Flash, Supergirl, and The Goldbergs. He owns a comic book store in Red Bank, New Jersey that became the set for Comic Book Men (2012-2018), co-hosts several podcasts on his SModcast Podcast Network, and has spent two decades filming long, humorous Q&A sessions with audiences, starting with An Evening with Kevin Smith in 2002.
