About

Born in Liverpool in 1940, Lennon formed the Quarrymen in 1956, which became the Beatles in 1960; his partnership with Paul McCartney built the most successful songwriting catalog in history. By 1967 his songs had become counterculture anthems, and in 1969 he left the Beatles to start the Plastic Ono Band with Yoko Ono, staging bed-ins and releasing protest singles like "Give Peace a Chance" and "Imagine." After moving to New York in 1971, his anti-Vietnam stance triggered a three-year Nixon deportation fight; he separated from Ono for two years, produced Nilsson and collaborated with Elton Jo…
