Robert Francis Kennedy Jr. was born January 17, 1954, into the Kennedy political dynasty - his father a senator and attorney general, his uncle the president. He started as a Manhattan assistant DA, then turned to environmental law in the mid-1980s, joining Riverkeeper and NRDC, founding Pace's Environmental Litigation Clinic in 1987, and launching Waterkeeper Alliance in 1999. By 2005 he had pivoted to promoting debunked claims linking vaccines to autism, HIV/AIDS denialism, and chemtrail theories, founding the anti-vaccine group Children's Health Defense and writing books attacking public health officials. He ran for president in 2024 as a Democrat, then an independent, before withdrawing to endorse Donald Trump. In February 2025 the Senate confirmed him 52-48 as health secretary, a appointment that drew fierce opposition from scientists and physicians who cited his long record of fueling vaccine hesitancy tied to measles outbreaks in Samoa and Tonga.
