Born in San Juan in 1940, Raúl Julia came to New York on the advice of Orson Bean and found his footing in the Public Theater and mobile troupes like the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater. Producer Joseph Papp pulled him into the Shakespeare Festival, and by 1978 he was onstage with Meryl Streep in Taming of the Shrew. Four Tony nominations followed across the next decade - Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Threepenny Opera, Nine - along with Broadway turns in Pinter's Betrayal and revivals of Othello and Design for Living. Film gave him wider reach: Kiss of the Spider Woman, Presumed Innocent, Romero, and the two Addams Family pictures that made him a studio draw. His last role was Street Fighter in 1994, shot while his health was failing. He died that October after a stroke. The Burning Season, his final work, won him an Emmy and a Golden Globe posthumously.
