Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was born July 9, 1956, and broke through as a co-lead on the ABC sitcom Bosom Buddies in 1980. He rose through eighties comedies - Splash in 1984, Big in 1988 - before the turn: back-to-back Best Actor Oscars for Philadelphia in 1993 and Forrest Gump in 1994. From there he split the difference between big Hollywood sentiment (Saving Private Ryan in 1998, Cast Away in 2000, five Spielberg features, Sheriff Woody across the Toy Story films) and a workmanlike appetite for prestige biopics - Captain Phillips, Sully, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Elvis. He directed twice, hosted Saturday Night Live ten times, launched Playtone to produce miniseries like Band of Brothers, and collected every major American honor by 2020. He remains the fourth-highest-grossing American film actor of all time, still working, still trusted.
