Mckenna Grace started young, cycling through Disney XD and a soap opera before the 2017 film Gifted, where she played a child prodigy and earned her first Critics' Choice nomination. For a stretch she made a career of inhabiting famous people as children, shuttling between I, Tonya, The Haunting of Hill House, and Captain Marvel while anchoring smaller leads in The Bad Seed and Annabelle Comes Home. In 2021 she became the first child nominated for a guest acting Emmy, playing an abused teenager in The Handmaid's Tale. That same year she took the role that stuck: Phoebe Spengler in Ghostbusters: Afterlife and its 2024 sequel, a pair of films that let her be wry and weird in her own right. By 2022 she was writing and producing her own Bad Seed sequel, playing Jan Broberg in A Friend of the Family, and releasing EPs that toggled between pop rock and folk. The through line held: she never played it safe, and the work kept widening.
