Born July 13, 1942, Ford spent years in small parts—American Graffiti in 1973, The Conversation in 1974—before George Lucas cast him as Han Solo in 1977. Star Wars made him global overnight, and he followed it by anchoring Indiana Jones from 1981 forward, then Blade Runner in 1982. The trifecta locked him in as the action hero of his generation. His lone Oscar nomination came for Witness in 1985; the rest of his career unspooled across thrillers and dramedies—The Fugitive, Air Force One, Presumed Innocent—and a late-career return to both Star Wars and Blade Runner decades later.
