British actor and musician (1934–2016)
The man inside R2-D2. For four decades, Kenny Baker gave the galaxy's most beloved droid its physical presence — every wobble, every tilt — while the beeps came later in post.
Born 24 August 1934, Kenneth George Baker was a British actor, comedian and musician who found his signature role in 1977 when George Lucas cast him inside the barrel of R2-D2 for Star Wars. He returned to the droid across the original trilogy and the prequels, turning a tin can into a character through movement alone. Between films, he appeared in The Elephant Man, Time Bandits, Willow, Flash Gordon, Amadeus and Labyrinth. He died 13 August 2016, eleven days before his 82nd birthday.
