Charles Robert Redford Jr. started on television in the late 1950s, moving through anthology shows before his Broadway debut in Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park in 1963. Hollywood stardom arrived with the 1967 film version, then cemented with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in 1969 and The Sting in 1973, which earned him an Oscar nomination. Through the mid-1980s he anchored major films - The Way We Were, All the President's Men, Out of Africa - before pivoting behind the camera: his directorial debut, Ordinary People, won Best Picture and Best Director in 1980. He co-founded the Sundance Institute and Festival in 1978, nurturing generations of independent filmmakers while continuing to act and direct into his eighties. His final on-screen role came in Avengers: Endgame in 2019; he died September 16, 2025, leaving the Presidential Medal of Freedom, an Honorary Oscar, and a festival that carries his chosen name.
