Robert Duvall started on summer stages in Long Island in 1952, then spent the sixties moving through television drama before slipping onto the big screen as the unseen Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird. The 1970s brought the roles that proved his range: the cool consigliore in The Godfather, the surf-obsessed colonel in Apocalypse Now, the brutal father in The Great Santini. He won his Oscar in 1983 for Tender Mercies, playing an alcoholic country singer in a performance he built with technical precision, and kept working into his eighties — earning six more Academy Award nominations, two Em…
