Born in Nebraska in 1905, Fonda came up through Broadway before his 1935 Hollywood debut. He hit his stride fast: Jesse James and Young Mr. Lincoln in 1939, then an Oscar nomination for Tom Joad in The Grapes of Wrath (1940). After World War II service, he anchored Westerns for John Ford — My Darling Clementine, Fort Apache — and took a seven-year film break to work on stage. He returned in 1955 with Mister Roberts, then co-produced 12 Angry Men (1957) as the lone dissenting juror, earning a BAFTA.
