He sat behind the desk longer than anyone - 33 years, 6,080 episodes - and turned late-night into an art of barely concealed contempt. The gap-toothed grin, the cue cards, the studied indifference: every host who followed learned the trade from watching him pretend not to care.

About this person

Letterman launched Late Night on NBC on February 1, 1982, carrying what he'd learned from Johnny Carson into something stranger and more self-aware. The show moved to CBS in 1993 as the Late Show, and he kept going until May 20, 2015, outlasting Carson's record and becoming the longest-serving late-night host in American television history. His production company, Worldwide Pants, built an empire beyond his own chair, producing The Late Late Show and primetime comedies including Everybody Loves Raymond. Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, Jon Stewart - they all cite him. Since 2018 he's hosted My Next Guest Needs No Introduction on Netflix, still asking questions, still wearing the beard.
