Something wrong? He disappears into roles so thoroughly that the character eclipses the actor - a trick that's made him one of the most unnerving presences in American film.

Born Joaquin Rafael Bottom on October 28, 1974, he started acting in television alongside his brother River in the early 1980s, briefly going by Leaf Phoenix before reclaiming his birth name. His supporting turn as the sadistic Commodus in Gladiator (2000) earned him his first Oscar nomination, followed by a Grammy-winning performance as Johnny Cash in Walk the Line (2005). After a strange sabbatical, he returned with The Master (2012), winning the Volpi Cup, then built a run through Her (2013), Inherent Vice (2014), and You Were Never Really Here (2017), which took Cannes. Joker (2019) finally brought him the Academy Award for Best Actor - a role he reprised in 2024's Folie à Deux. Outside the camera, he's a vegan and animal rights activist who produces documentaries on meat consumption and the environment.
