Born 30 November 1937, Scott came up through British television design and advertising before his 1977 debut The Duellists announced a filmmaker with an eye. Alien followed in 1979, then Blade Runner in 1982 - both would enter the Library of Congress registry, both would define how futures look on film. His range stretched from the Colosseum in Gladiator, which won Best Picture in 2000, to Mogadishu in Black Hawk Down, to the ride-or-die blacktop of Thelma & Louise. Three Best Director nominations, a knighthood in 2003, another in 2024. He's the eighth-highest-grossing director alive, with $5 billion worth of atmospheric dread and ancient dust. At 86 he's still building worlds - Gladiator II landed in 2024.
