About

Born in New York in 1949 to a television executive and an English actress, Weaver made her screen debut in Annie Hall before Alien in 1979 gave her the role that rewrote what leading women could be in blockbusters. She carried Ripley through three more films while building a second track in Ghostbusters and later the Avatar series, franchises that became some of the highest-grossing ever made. In 1989 she won two Golden Globes in the same year for Gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl, the first actor to do it, and collected a BAFTA for The Ice Storm in 1997.
