Viggo Mortensen made his film debut in Peter Weir's 1985 thriller Witness and spent the late 1990s in supporting turns across genres, from The Portrait of a Lady to G.I. Jane to A Perfect Murder. The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003) brought international attention as Aragorn, but he used the momentum to chase stranger territory: a string of collaborations with David Cronenberg starting with A History of Violence in 2005, then Eastern Promises in 2007, which earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Two more Oscar nods followed for Captain Fantastic in 2016 and Green Book in 2018. He directed and starred in Falling in 2020. Outside film he paints, writes poetry, composes music - he contributed to The Lord of the Rings soundtrack and released albums with guitarist Buckethead - and in 2002 founded Perceval Press to publish his own work and that of little-known artists.
