About

Born March 15, 1943, Cronenberg built the body horror genre from the ground up with Shivers in 1975, then sharpened it through Scanners, Videodrome, and The Fly—films that made transformation, infection, and the merger of flesh and machine into recurring obsessions. His work polarized audiences and critics in equal measure, earning both awards and accusations; Crash took a Special Jury Prize at Cannes in 1996, given specifically "for originality, for daring, and for audacity," an honor the festival doesn't hand out annually.
