Her breakout came in 1998 as Elizabeth I in Elizabeth, earning her first Oscar nod and launching an international career. She won Best Supporting Actress for Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator (2004), then Best Actress for Blue Jasmine (2013), with further nominations for Notes on a Scandal, I'm Not There, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Carol, and Tár - the most of any Australian. Between Middle-earth (The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies) and blockbusters like Thor: Ragnarok and Don't Look Up, she spent five years as artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company with her husband Andrew Upton, mounting over twenty stage productions including A Streetcar Named Desire and Uncle Vanya. She made her Broadway debut in The Present in 2017, earned Emmy nominations for Mrs. America and Disclaimer, and collected honors from the Australian government, the French Order of Arts and Letters, and the British Film Institute. Time named her one of the hundred most influential people in the world in 2007.
