Timothy Dalton started on stage and broke into film as Philip II of France in The Lion in Winter (1968), then spent the '70s in period pieces: Wuthering Heights, Cromwell, Mary, Queen of Scots. He turned up as a star of the epic miniseries Centennial in 1978, played Mr. Rochester in the BBC's Jane Eyre in 1983, and eventually landed the role that would define him: James Bond in The Living Daylights (1987) and Licence to Kill (1989). After Bond he ranged wide - Flash Gordon, The Rocketeer, Hot Fuzz, a turn as Rhett Butler in the Scarlett miniseries - but his second act came on prestige television: Rassilon in Doctor Who, Sir Malcolm Murray across three seasons of Penny Dreadful, the Chief on Doom Patrol for four years, Peter Townsend in The Crown, and Donald Whitfield on the Yellowstone prequel 1923.
