Stephen Glenn Martin was born August 14, 1945, and broke through writing for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, winning a Primetime Emmy in 1969. By the mid-1970s he was selling out theaters with offbeat, absurdist stand-up - a style that earned him Grammy Awards for Let's Get Small (1977) and A Wild and Crazy Guy (1978). He turned to film with The Jerk in 1979, then a run through the 1980s and 1990s that included Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Roxanne, L.A. Story, the Father of the Bride films, and Bowfinger. Since 2015 he's toured with Martin Short; in 2021 the pair launched Only Murders in the Building on Hulu alongside Selena Gomez, which brought him Emmy and Golden Globe nominations and a Peabody nod. He's also written for Broadway - the musical Bright Star in 2016, the comedy Meteor Shower in 2017 - and released bluegrass albums that won him three more Grammys.
