Edward Regan Murphy was born April 3, 1961, and by 1980 he was a regular on Saturday Night Live, holding the show together through four seasons before breaking into film. 48 Hrs. in 1982 made him a movie star; Trading Places and Beverly Hills Cop sealed it. He spent the next two decades alternating between leading-man vehicles—Coming to America, The Nutty Professor, Dr. Dolittle—and multi-role experiments paying homage to Peter Sellers, his idol. A Golden Globe for Dreamgirls in 2006 and an Oscar nomination followed, then a long stretch of misfires until Dolemite Is My Name in 2019 pulled him…
