33th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire (1876)
He held the Ottoman throne for exactly 93 days. A constitutional reformer who helped topple his uncle to reach power, Murad V's own fragile mental state ended his reign before summer was out.
Born 21 September 1840, Murad was the son of Sultan Abdulmejid I and grew up favoring constitutional government over absolute rule. When his uncle Abdulaziz took the throne after Abdulmejid's death and tried to install his own son as heir, Murad joined the plot that overthrew him. He became sultan on 30 May 1876 with reformist hopes. But his physical and mental health proved too frail to sustain the role. On 31 August, after just over three months, he was deposed in favor of his half-brother Abdul Hamid II. Murad lived under confinement until his death on 29 August 1904.
