Mehmed III

Mehmed III inherited the Ottoman throne in 1595 at twenty-nine and immediately ordered the deaths of his brothers to eliminate rival claimants, a massacre that marked the empire's succession custom at its most brutal. He personally commanded the army during the Long Turkish War, winning the Battle of Keresztes, though the triumph was later eroded by losses at Győr and Nikopol. At home he crushed the Jelali rebellions, restoring a measure of internal order. His court sought alliance with Elizabeth I's England against Spain, pushing for stronger trade ties across the religious divide. He died in 1603, eight years into a reign defined by blood and battlefield, leaving the empire no steadier than he found it.
