Mehmed III inherited the Ottoman throne in 1595 at twenty-nine and immediately ordered the deaths of his brothers to eliminate rival claimants, a massacre that marked the empire's succession custom at its most brutal. He personally commanded the army during the Long Turkish War, winning the Battle of Keresztes, though the triumph was later eroded by losses at Győr and Nikopol. At home he crushed the Jelali rebellions, restoring a measure of internal order.
