25th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire (1754–1757)
An Ottoman sultan who spent most of his life confined to the palace before ascending the throne at 55, only to reign for three years and die.
Born January 2, 1699, Osman spent more than five decades in the shadows of the imperial court before becoming sultan in 1754. He took the throne at an age when most rulers were already dead or deposed, inheriting an empire in the middle of its long, uneven decline. His reign lasted three years. He died October 30, 1757, and the throne passed to his cousin Mustafa III.
