About this person
Born February 22, 1929, Hong entered Hollywood during its Golden Age and co-founded East West Players, the first Asian American theatre company in the country, to crack open doors the industry kept shut. He worked steadily through detective shows and westerns - The New Adventures of Charlie Chan, Bonanza, Hawaii Five-O - then slipped into the margins of major films: Chinatown, Blade Runner, Big Trouble in Little China. For decades he was the face you recognized but couldn't name, logging roles in Airplane!, the Seinfeld "Chinese Restaurant" episode, and eventually as Mr. Ping in Kung Fu Panda. In 2022, at ninety-three, he played Gong Gong in Everything Everywhere All at Once, earned a Screen Actors Guild Award with the ensemble, and finally received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame - recognition that arrived after more than six hundred credits.
