He slid into American Gigolo in 1980 and became the rarest thing: a leading man who could carry both heat and loneliness, sex symbol and serious actor at once.
Richard Tiffany Gere began in the 1970s with a supporting turn in Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977) and a lead in Days of Heaven (1978). American Gigolo (1980) cracked him open to fame. An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) and Pretty Woman (1990) followed, along with darker work in Internal Affairs (1990), Primal Fear (1996), Red Corner (1997), and Unfaithful (2002). He won a Golden Globe for playing Billy Flynn in the film version of Chicago (2002). Later films included Arbitrage (2012) and Norman (2016). The through line: a man who could do charm and damage in the same frame.
