Born April 25, 1940, Alfredo James Pacino came up through underground theater and off-Broadway, studying method under Charlie Laughton and Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio. His 1972 turn as Michael Corleone in The Godfather made him inescapable; the nominations piled up — Serpico, The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon — but the Oscar didn't come until Scent of a Woman twenty years later.
