About this person

Marcelo Vieira da Silva Júnior broke through at Fluminense in 2005, winning a Campeonato Carioca and making the 2006 Brasileirão Team of the Season before Real Madrid paid €8 million to bring him to Spain in January 2007. He was 18. What followed was a decade and a half as a mainstay in the white shirt, collecting five UEFA Champions League trophies and six La Liga titles while redefining what an attacking left-back could be. In 2021, he was handed the captain's armband - the first foreigner to lead Madrid since 1904. He left in 2022 with 25 trophies, spent five months at Olympiacos, then returned to Fluminense in 2023 and won the Copa Libertadores. For Brazil, he won bronze at the 2008 Olympics, silver in 2012, lifted the 2013 Confederations Cup, and made the Dream Team at both the 2014 and 2018 World Cups. Six FIFPro World XIs, three UEFA Teams of the Year, and a spot in France Football's Team of the Decade followed him through it all.
