He was 19 when he became the youngest goalkeeper to win a Champions League, and he turned that precocious start into 25 years at Real Madrid, a World Cup, two Euros as captain, and a career that ended only when his heart gave out during a Porto training session in 2019.

About this person

Iker Casillas Fernández came through Real Madrid's youth system and reached the first team in 1999, winning two Champions Leagues and two La Liga titles in his first three seasons. Over 25 years he collected every major club trophy - five league titles, three European Cups, a Club World Cup - before leaving for Porto in 2015, where he set the record for most consecutive Champions League seasons (20) and most appearances in the competition (177). With Spain he waited as a substitute at Euro 2000, then became first choice at the 2002 World Cup; named captain in 2008, he led the team to the European Championship that year, the 2010 World Cup (winning the Yashin Award after five clean sheets), and Euro 2012, where he set the record for most consecutive minutes without conceding (509). A heart attack during training in May 2019 left him sidelined, and he retired in February 2020. He now works as a commentator for RTVE, Movistar Plus+, and Azteca Deportes.
