Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima was born 18 September 1976 in Brazil and tore through Cruzeiro, PSV, then Barcelona, where at 20 he became the youngest FIFA World Player of the Year in 1996. Inter Milan broke the world transfer record to sign him in 1997 — making him the first since Maradona to break it twice — and at 21 he claimed the Ballon d'Or, still the youngest ever. A series of knee injuries cost him nearly three years. He returned to win the 2002 World Cup, scoring twice in the final and taking the Golden Boot — redemption for the convulsive fit that felled him hours before the 1998 final…
