John Joseph Travolta broke through on the sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter starting in 1975, then became a film lead with a supporting turn in Carrie in 1976. Saturday Night Fever in 1977 earned him his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor, followed by Grease in 1978, Urban Cowboy in 1980, and Blow Out in 1981. His second Academy Award nomination came seventeen years later for Pulp Fiction in 1994, launching a second wave that included Get Shorty, Face/Off, Primary Colors, and A Civil Action.
