About this person

Born 26 September 1948, Olivia Newton-John built her early career on soft country-pop singles like "If Not for You" and "Let Me Be There" before "I Honestly Love You" won Record of the Year in 1974. In 1978 she took the lead in Grease opposite John Travolta; the film became the highest-grossing musical of its era and its soundtrack one of the best-selling albums ever, anchored by "You're the One That I Want" and her solo "Hopelessly Devoted to You." She followed with "Magic" and "Xanadu" from the 1980 film, then pivoted hard into "Physical" in 1981 - Billboard's top Hot 100 single of the decade. Fifteen top-ten singles, four Grammys, and over 100 million records sold made her the highest-selling female Australian artist of all time. Diagnosed with breast cancer three times, she opened the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre in Melbourne in 2012 and spent her final years advocating for research and animal rights. She died 8 August 2022, named a Dame five months before she was gone.
