Nelly Kim Furtado was born December 2, 1978, and broke through in 2000 with Whoa, Nelly!, a trip-hop-leaning debut that sent "I'm Like a Bird" into the top 10 and won her a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. She followed with Folklore (2003), a more introspective, folk-oriented record that drew on her Portuguese heritage but sold less. Then came the pivot: Loose (2006) moved over 10 million copies worldwide and produced "Promiscuous" (featuring Timbaland), "Maneater", "Say It Right", and "All Good Things (Come to an End)" - all number-ones. She appeared on Timbaland's "Give It to Me" with Justin Timberlake in 2007 and recorded "Broken Strings" with James Morrison the next year. Mi Plan (2009), sung in Spanish, won the Latin Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Album; The Spirit Indestructible followed in 2012. After going independent, she released The Ride (2017) on her own label, Nelstar Entertainment, and 7 in 2024.
