About this person

Born into the wealthy Bush family in Massachusetts and raised in Greenwich, Connecticut, George Herbert Walker Bush flew Navy missions in World War II before moving to West Texas to found Zapata Corporation. After losing a Senate race in 1964, he won a House seat in 1966 and climbed through appointments - UN ambassador under Nixon, Republican National Committee chair, envoy to China under Ford, then CIA director in 1976. Reagan beat him in the 1980 primaries, then made him vice president for eight years. Bush won the presidency in 1988 against Michael Dukakis and presided over German reunification, the U.S. invasion of Panama, and the Gulf War that expelled Iraq from Kuwait. He negotiated NAFTA, signed the Americans with Disabilities Act and Clean Air Act amendments, and put David Souter and Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court - but raising taxes after promising he wouldn't, combined with a recession, cost him the 1992 election to Bill Clinton. His son George W. won the presidency in 2000, making them the second father-son pair to hold the office. He died in Houston in 2018 after battling vascular parkinsonism.
