She beat a 10-term Democratic incumbent in 2018 and became the youngest woman ever elected to Congress at 29. The upset made her a lightning rod - progressive hero to some, far-left threat to others - and she's held the seat and the attention ever since.

About this person

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was born October 13, 1989, and joined the Democratic Socialists of America before running for New York's 14th congressional district in 2018. Her primary win over Joe Crowley, then the Democratic Caucus chair, was called the year's biggest upset. Taking office in 2019, she and Rashida Tlaib became the first two DSA women in Congress. She's pushed Medicare for All, tuition-free public college, a Green New Deal, a jobs guarantee, worker cooperatives, and abolishing ICE - a platform described as progressive, left-wing populist, and far-left. Reelected in 2020, 2022, and 2024, she remains one of the most polarizing voices in American politics.
