About

Born October 27, 1858, Roosevelt fought debilitating asthma with a regime of vigorous exercise, studied natural history, and wrote The Naval War of 1812 while at Harvard, establishing himself as both historian and reformer in the New York State Legislature. After his wife Alice and mother died on the same day, he bought a cattle ranch in the Dakotas to recover, then returned as assistant secretary of the Navy, helped plan the naval war against Spain in 1898, and resigned to lead the Rough Riders in Cuba.
