About this person

Born July 6, 1946, into the Bush family, he flew warplanes in the Texas Air National Guard, graduated from Harvard Business School in 1975, worked in oil, and co-owned the Texas Rangers. He won the Texas governorship in 1994, pushing tort reform and education funding, then took the presidency in 2000 after losing the popular vote but winning a Supreme Court decision that stopped the Florida recount. September 11, 2001, reshaped everything: he ordered the invasion of Afghanistan, signed the Patriot Act, and launched the 2003 Iraq war over weapons claims that proved false. His second term brought Hurricane Katrina, the Abu Ghraib scandal, a troop surge in Iraq, and the 2008 financial collapse. He left office in 2009 deeply unpopular, returned to Texas, and has kept a low profile since.
