Biography

About

Born into wealth in Hyde Park, New York, Roosevelt moved through Harvard, a New York State Senate seat in 1910, and a post as assistant secretary of the Navy under Wilson. In 1921, an illness permanently paralyzed his legs, but with his wife Eleanor's encouragement he returned to politics and won the New York governorship in 1928. He crushed Herbert Hoover in 1932 and spent his first hundred days pushing through the New Deal — relief programs, financial regulation, the end of Prohibition — then won reelection in 1936 by a historic margin.
