Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1942, Biden won a Senate seat from Delaware in 1972 and chaired both the Judiciary and Foreign Relations committees over three decades, drafting the Violence Against Women Act and overseeing contentious Supreme Court hearings for Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas. After failed presidential runs in 1988 and 2008, Obama picked him as running mate, and he served two terms as vice president before defeating Trump in 2020 with Kamala Harris.
