Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1942, Biden won a Senate seat from Delaware in 1972 and chaired both the Judiciary and Foreign Relations committees over three decades, drafting the Violence Against Women Act and overseeing contentious Supreme Court hearings for Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas. After failed presidential runs in 1988 and 2008, Obama picked him as running mate, and he served two terms as vice president before defeating Trump in 2020 with Kamala Harris. As president from 2021 to 2025, he signed the American Rescue Plan and infrastructure bills, withdrew troops from Afghanistan in a chaotic exit that saw the Taliban retake control, and backed Ukraine with sanctions and aid after Russia's invasion. Concerns about his age shadowed the presidency - he turned 80 in office - and after a halting debate performance intensified scrutiny across the political spectrum, he withdrew from the 2024 race, leaving historians to assess a tenure the public had soured on amid inflation.
